Despite what many would think, turning a garden into a have for birds sadly isn’t as simple as throwing out a bag of nuts in the winter. There are however several abundantly more realistic ideas to try out, which certainly do not involve any real back-breaking involvement.
It was once suggested that food should only be put out for birds in the winter, but this has now been changed by experts who advise year round feeding – which apparently will not impact the amount of insects they consume as once suspected. The best approach here is to be creative and offer variety, but not get swallowed up by the thousands of seed/feed options and forget about the basics. Sunflower seeds, canary seed and husk free oats make ideal choices.
With food taken care of, turn attention to the equally important matter of clean and unfrozen water. The best advice here is to use a sloping bath so as to accommodate birds of all sizes, adding a couple of flat stones to act as steps in and out. Always place the water where it can be changed and cleaned regularly with ease.
Of course, all the nuts and water in the land will fall short if there’s nowhere for the birds to survey the area and wait for their turn in queue. Decking, bare lawns and concrete drives for 4×4 cars may look attractive, but offer none of the cover most birds depend upon. As such, a mixture of shrubs, climbers and trees is essential, with holly, hawthorn and honeysuckle serving as ideal examples.
